The SOCRATES group has officially started its research activities. At the SOCRATES Welcome Day on 4 October 2023, the SOCRATES directors and team members met with four inaugural fellows to discuss the research agenda for the coming months.

The co-directors Prof. Dr. Mathias Frisch and Prof. Dr. Torsten Wilholt have welcomed the very first group of SOCRATES fellows: Dr. Katherine Furman (University of Liverpool), Dr. Zinhle Mncube (UC San Diego), Prof. Jacob Stegenga (University of Cambridge), and Prof. Robert Evans (Cardiff University). At the SOCRATES Welcome Day on October 4th, 2023, the new fellows first met with SOCRATES team members Dr. T.Y. Branch, Dr. Leonie Wiemeyer, Johanna Drese, and Amir Latifi, as well as SOCRATES associates Dr. Tanja Rechnitzer and Donal Khosrowi.

During their time at SOCRATES, the fellows will investigate a range of topics surrounding trust in science and credibility of scientific expertise in the coming months. Together with philosophers of science from the Institute of Philosophy at Leibniz University Hannover, they will collaboratively address trust, trustworthiness, uncertainty, and related themes from a philosophical perspective.

The DFG-funded Centre for Advanced Studies SOCRATES officially opened on 1 October 2023 and is located at the Institute of Philosophy at Leibniz University Hannover. SOCRATES stands for Social Credibility and Trustworthiness of Expert Knowledge and Science-Based Information. The group provides a forum for interdisciplinary exchange on scientific credibility and trust in science. Over the course of the next four (and hopefully eight) years, we will have fellows from all over the world and from different disciplines visit us at Hannover and collaborate with philosophers here on topics such as climate science and the climate crisis, scientific expertise in the health sciences, and credibility within and of the behavioral sciences.
