Instrumentalization of Epistemic Truths?

Scientists are often perceived as especially trustworthy and are granted a unique form of epistemic authority in public discourse. The presentation investigates how scientists use this authority when addressing controversial socio-scientific issues in public. Drawing on a survey experiment with scientists from Germany, the UK, and the US, I explore how different self-understandings shape scientists’ approaches to policy advice. Specifically, I distinguish between three rhetorical strategies: Scientists may outline policy options, promote specific ones, or frame societal problems as technical questions with only one ‘true’ policy solution. The study reveals that some scientists are prone to framing their policy advice in ways that potentially curtail public debate. The study contributes to understanding how epistemic authority is exercised in contested settings and raises the question of how science can remain a credible source of shared knowledge in democratic societies.
