The Precautionary Principle: Discussion with Prof. Paul Bartha

Confronted with the possibility of severe and irreversible harm, such as catastrophic consequences of climate change, many philosophers and decision theorists have argued that we should abandon the principle at the heart of standard decision theory—the injunction to maximize expected utility—and embrace a different one: the Precautionary Principle (PP). We have invited Prof. Paul Bartha (University of British Columbia) to present a specific approach to defining the PP for use in decision-making: the lexical approach, which he developed in collaboration with Daniel Steel and Tyler DesRoches.

Please note: this is a pre-read meeting. The recommended reading can be found here.

This is a closed event for SOCRATES members only.  Attendance is strictly in person (with the exception of prof. Bartha, who will join us online).
