Debate on existing injustices and emerging scientific issues all come together in this strategic move to engage public discourse on the relevance of science in daily life. This year, UNESCO highlights the importance of trust in science for shaping our collective future, both in terms of how scientists carry out research, and how publics perceive science.
SOCRATES leads research into precisely how science needs trust and how society requires trustworthy science. Without trust, a socially shared knowledge base will remain elusive, and scientifically-informed decisions about policy and society risk suffering as a result. In response to this concern, SOCRATES is bringing together leading scholars from around the globe with diverse expertise. Their research in environmental science, sociology, philosophy of health and policy, race and personalizing medicine, biology, science communication, values in science and expertise itself aim to improve our understanding of what trust in science entails and how it can be earned.
