Vita
Before joining SOCRATES, Gabriel Târziu was a postdoctoral fellow at the MCMP (LMU Munich). His research explores the epistemological particularities of scientific understanding in climate science, with special attention to the role of model hierarchies. He works broadly in epistemology, the philosophy of science, and the philosophy of mathematics, with wide- ranging interests in scientific explanation and understanding, and the applicability of mathematics in science. Prior to his time at the MCMP, Gabriel held research fellowships in Munich, Brussels, Essen, and Ghent, and was as a postdoctoral researcher at the Romanian Academy.
Contribution to SOCRATES
Gabriel Târziu’s research at SOCRATES focuses on the relationship between public understanding of science, trust in science, and the impact of non-epistemic values on laypeople’s epistemic stances. He plans to develop a novel framework to analyze how the public engages with scientific information, especially in the context of climate change. During his stay, Târziu is working on two papers that will provide the theoretical groundwork for this framework.
